Takaful for Life:
The Golden Years of Retirement

60 marks the official age of retirement in Malaysia. It is also widely regarded as when one enters the final phase of our lives – old age. However, in this day and age of modern medicine, 60 doesn’t have to be the marker of our twilight years. With improved healthcare, standards of living, and awareness on the importance of staying physically active, not to mention a host of activities catered specifically for retirees, entering this phase our lives could also be one of freedom and a new found enthusiasm for life as we break free from the bonds we have had to be responsible for through most of our adult lives.

The freedom of retirement
Assuming life has been kind to you, retirement brings some key essential freedoms:

  • You no longer have to work and are able to access and survive on your pensions or retirement fund.

  • Your children are old enough to be self-sufficient, and may, in turn, support your finances instead.

  • Your financial responsibility is now minimal, with little or no debts to repay apart from regular spending.

  • Your assets – such as a piece of property – are there to support you in the event you ever need to liquidate.

Besides freedom from significant financial responsibilities, retirees will also find themselves with more time on their hands. There is no longer the need to work, or children to raise. Of course, some retirees choose to go back to work to occupy their time, while others are happy to babysit their grandchildren. Others take the opportunity to enjoy their retirement years by pursuing new hobbies, traveling with fellow retirees or meeting friends for weekly walks around the neighbourhood park. In fact, some of the more fitter retirees have been known to participate in highly physical sporting activities such as full or iron man marathons – proof to us all that while old age and retirement does refer to the last few years and decades of our lives, it doesn’t mean it is the end of living and of making new memories.

The aches and pains of growing old
There is, however, no denying that old age will cause a decline in our overall health. No matter how young we feel at heart, or how fit we are despite being 60 or 70 or 80, old age certainly comes with increased health risks and the highest possibility of contracting arthritis, heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis and diabetes. There is also a higher tendency of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, depression and not forgetting an increased susceptibility to falling, which can lead to even more complications including broken bones that will take longer to heal simply because our bodies in this golden age does not heal as quickly compared to our youthful days.

Taking the undeniable decline of our health into consideration and the lack of new income to support this, an important question must be asked – do you have sufficient finances to manage your declining health in your retirement years?
